I have developed a life-long habit of taking notes of every book I read. My bookmark is a blank piece of paper on which I write things of interest that strike me as I read along. Within a couple of pages of "The Handbook" I stopped taking notes. If I had continued, I would have had as many pages of notes as the book is long. This book is jam packed with very useful information for those thinking of a career as a magazine writer. I have just begun working in this field, and I must say that there is not an area not covered by the 56 contributors to this work. This is like a college course that instructs you on how to find ideas for articles, how to write a great query letter, the dollars and cents of running your own free-lance business, researching, interviewing, developing a style, it is all-inclusive. If you have thoughts of becoming a magazine writer, you can cut out a lot of the uncertainty, stress, waste motions, and rejections of this business by studying this book. I daresay I'll be turning to this handbook on at least a weekly basis. Thank you to the editor and contributors for a job very well done.

Everyone loved the books and it brought back many memories for all of us, no matter what age. My grandchildren have also enjoyed looking at the book and have found it very interesting. The book is educational and entertaining. I would recomend the book to others.

Diehard Mothering readers might think this book is a little too mainstream, but I think it's very valuable for people who are learning about the concept of natural childbirth and evaluating all their options. It gives a detailed analysis of the risks involved with everyday interventions and encourages birthing mothers to be fully informed before submitting to them. It offers suggestions for natural remedies, yoga postures, meditation, and natural comfort measures while in labor, and even mentions that you might use a midwife and birth at home. However, the book also assumes that you might feel more comfortable delivering in a hospital -- without making you feel guilty about that choice. I came away from this book feeling positive about being pregnant, not nervous or worried like after reading "What To Expect...". I think it does a good job of debunking many of today's obstetrical myths and gives new moms courage to ask questions. My first birth was totally natural, in a hospital. I just finished reading this a month into my second pregnancy. It validates the ideas I had the first time around and gives me even more resolve to pursue a drug-free, interventionless birth again.

If jokes and verbose trying-to-be-clever writing were advertising, this book would be Oprah Magazine. But more on that later--I just needed a lead as per chapter 19 "Hook 'Em Early, Hook 'Em Hard."

"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Magazine Articles" is like an introduction 101 survey class to this topic. Among many other things, it covers the basics of the entire process from generating article ideas, to writing query letters to conducting interviews, writing basics, and even how freelance writers deal with taxes. Like a 101 class, this book provides breadth but not depth. Most beginning magazine writers will likely need more of the material on earlier parts of the process such as studying the market and writing query letters rather than dealing with taxes and contracts. However, as a survey course, they do have their place, with the exception of the chapter on writing books and book proposals. For an excellent, more in depth treatment of query letters, a topic a novice will definitely need, I recommend "How to Write Irresistible Query Letters" by Lisa Collier Cool.

Having published a handful of freelance pieces and knowing the basics of the process, I can tell you the information is provided is good, sound advice. My problem with the book is that you have to wade through so much verbose trying-to-be clever chatty writing to get to the basics you need as a freelance magazine writer. It's like the authors, unbridled from the tight word counts and no nonsense editing of magazines went nuts trying to be cute and clever. For one of many examples, there's a section called "Ratatatatat: Machine Gun Writing" which begins, "Do you feel like Bruce Willis in 'Die Hard' right about now? What the heck do we mean when we say machine gun writing?" Then there's another paragraph before they get to the definition. I think this book could have been edited by about 1/3 with no loss of content.

None-the-less, I appreciated the content in between the jokes, even though some of it was not in depth enough to my liking, such as the brief section on how to get clips. I especially liked the interviews with magazine editors discussing what writers need to do to break into writing for their publications. If you need an intro 101 survey of the career of freelance writing and don't mind wading through all the chatty wisecracking writing, this is the book for you.

When i received this book i was relatively new to working out. I appreciated that the book relied on calisthenics. In order to build a good foundation to working out one must be versed in how the body moves and why. The exercises listed in the book allowed me to become more familiar with my bodies movements while gaining strength and muscle. I would definitely recommend this book for a beginner who wants an alternative to a weighted workout.

Since reading this book and following its instructions i have moved on to weighted workouts, but the knowledge and the strength base i developed has helped immensely.

I found How to Start a Magazine by James Kobak difficult to read and somewhat depressing. The promises on the cover, in my humble opinion, we never fulfilled and the textbook-style format was flat. I felt as if, rather than a telling me "how to" he was telling me all the reasons "not to." He also came from only one perspective--that of a large scale, national publication. My goal is to build a local business-builder magazine. Therefore, much of the information was irrelevant for me. Based on the cover promises, I thought I'd found the ideal book for my needs. It didn't deliver.

It is current and includes sections addressing the internet's role in magazine publishing, however the authors have devised cute section headings that make it difficult to use as a reference tool. I also noticed a focus on travel writing-so if that is your interest this book is for you. If you want a good no-frills intro to magazine publishing I would suggest "Writing and Selling Magazine Articles," by Eva Shaw.

You can start off with simple puzzles and work your way up to harder puzzles in the book. The only complaint I have is that it would be easier to work on the puzzles if it were spiral-bound.

It is hard to imagine a magazine that has compiled a more comprehensive history of the last century than Time magazine. Now, through the efforts of writers Norberto Angeletti and Alberto Oliva, we have a similar full and robust history of the magazine itself.

Interestingly, in this era of internet news aggregators (Google news anyone?), Time magazine actually began as an aggregator itself. The book details the origins of the magazine by a pair of 25 year old Yalies (Henry Luce and Briton Hadden - Hadden died in the magazine's first decade in print) who, beginning with their first issue in March of 1923, created a compendium of news articles from popular magazines of the day (The Atlantic Monthly, Le Figaro, the New Republic and others) eventually leading to their own world-class reportage that has summarized weekly events for over eight decades.

The book does an excellent job of detailing the development of the `world's most influential magazine' from both it's written and photographic history. Of note is the obvious visual growth of the magazine from the early charcoal drawing of notables of the day, to the famous red border version of the magazine that still lives on today. From illustrators, like cover collage maker, Boris Artzybasheff, portrait artist Robert Vickrey, or contemporary artists like Warhol, Lichtenstein and Rauschenberg, to the top-flight photographers - from Dorothea Lange to David Hume Kennerly to Matt Mahurin - to Nigel Holmes' charts of `info-graphics' to illustrate the news, Time magazine's portrayal of weekly events has as much to do with it's illustrative graphics as it does with it's long history of award-winning journalism.

It's impossible not to argue that the history of Time is the history of the world of the 20th century and it's focus on the influence of major world leaders is well evidenced in this volume. From the great depression, to World War II and well into the 21st century, Time's focus has been not only on world events, but on the political and thought leaders that created our view of the world. Lindburgh, Hitler, FDR, Einstein, Stalin, the Kennedy's and hundreds more were the subject of timely cover portraits depicted here as well as coverage of trends from Hollywood to civil rights, Vietnam to the space program, this compendium of Time magazine's coverage of history, is history, in and of itself.
